FUENGIROLA

FUENGIROLA is a large Spanish town in Southern Spain and has much to offer for the holiday maker. It is about twenty minutes’ drive from Malaga Airport and approx. 35 minutes by train. It has seven kilometres of tree lined promenade and fabulous sandy beaches with magnificent views of the Mediterranean. Most residents in Fuengirola are Spanish nationals with a large percentage of British and other nationalities. The town has numerous restaurants, supermarkets, tapas and café/bars. Also, an English-speaking theatre called Salon Varietes. (not open in high season)

There are excellent bus, coach and train services in central Fuengirola taking you to many places of interest in the area. A car is not essential.

FUENGIROLA FESTIVALS

April – The International Fair (La Feria de los Pueblos)

This is a wonderful, colourful fair where up to 50 countries from all over the world are represented.Each country is allocated its own casita where they celebrate their food and music

Easter Holy Week (Semana Santa)

The processions of Holy Week in Andalucia are spectacular, and it is a most important date in their religious festival. The people of Fuengirola turn out to participate in the processions, and visitors from many other countries come especially at this time to see the traditions of Semana Santa.

June 23rd – St. John’s Day (Noche de San Juan)

The 23rd of June is the day of St. John and is a very special night of the year. Many bonfires are built on the beach and is said to be a night of magic with fireworks. The background to the festivities comes from the first baptism given by St. John. Nowadays, it is a great excuse for night parties on the beach. The tradition is to walk into the sea backwards at midnight while you make a wish.

16th July – The Day of the Virgen Carmen (La Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen)

La Fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen is celebrated on the night of the 16th July where there is a colourful and very moving procession in Los Boliches. The Virgen del Carmen is carried in a procession down to the sea, where a waiting boat takes the ‘Virgen of the Seas’, as she is known, to Fuengirola port. People wade into the sea (many fully clothed) to see the Virgin off on her journey. The virgin figure is later carried back again to the church in Los Boliches. Flowers and a blaze of candles decorate the procession and the boat. Along with this magnificent sight, there are fireworks lighting up the skies on this very special night of the year.

Marenostrum Fuengirola – May to September

Marenostrum Fuengirola is one of the largest series of outdoor concerts events on the Costa del Sol attracting national and international stars. It presents an extensive cycle of concerts that includes classical, rock, flamenco, rap, indie and pop music.

17th to 20th August – Medieval Market

Set up inside the castle walls, where there are stalls with food and drink of the period. People are dressed in authentic mediaeval outfits. Music and side shows go on from the morning and into the night.

6th to 12th October 2024 – The Fuengirola Fair (Feria de Fuengirola)

This is one of the most important fairs in the Fuengirola calendar. The Fuengirola fair starts with a huge firework display on the 6th October. The people are dressed in their finest traditional clothes, and the streets are filled with beautifully dressed horses and carriages. There is a real festive atmosphere throughout the day and into the night at the feria ground.

This is a magical time with Christmas Lighting and market, music, concerts and nativity scenes.

New Year’s Eve in Fuengirola

The main celebrations at New Year’s Eve is around Plaza de España.At the stroke of midnight and when the clock strikes, there is a spectacular display of fireworks. At each chime of the clock, people participate in the Spanish tradition of eating twelve grapes, one for each chime.

Three Kings’ Day

The Three Kings Day is a delight for all children. Traditionally, the Three Kings arrive by helicopter and land at the Elola Social and Sports Complex at 4 pm on January 5th. The parade begins at 5pm on Calle Mallorca and will end on Avenida de los Boliches.
